Chinese New Year 2027 starts February 6. Where Chinese travelers are heading, when they book, and how hotels should plan, based on the latest data.
Chinese New Year 2027 falls on Saturday, February 6, and the data so far points to a holiday shaped by short-haul visa-free Asia, longer multi-country trips, early and off-peak departures, and strong demand for nature. Japan is the big unknown, and South Korea is the clearest winner. Here is what the 2026 Spring Festival, this autumn’s Golden Week and Chinese-language trade coverage tell hotels about planning for the Year of the Goat.
Chinese New Year 2027: the dates that matter
Chinese New Year’s Eve, the night of the family reunion dinner, is Friday, February 5, 2027. The festive season traditionally closes with the Lantern Festival on February 20.
The official holiday schedule is not out yet, though a nine-day break looks likely. Under the holiday rules China revised from January 1, 2025, the Spring Festival break normally runs eight days from New Year’s Eve, with make-up workdays. Because New Year’s Eve falls on a Friday in 2027, the break can run into the weekend for nine days off, Changjiang Daily reported on November 1, 2026. The 2026 schedule was published on November 4, 2025 and produced a nine-day break (February 15 to 23), which Chinese media called the longest Spring Festival holiday on record. Until the 2027 notice is published, treat the demand window as late January through the Lantern Festival, not a single week, and keep exact holiday dates out of your campaign creative.
What the 2026 Spring Festival told us
The 2026 holiday is the best available baseline for 2027. Here are the official headline numbers:
Metric (2026 Spring Festival, 9 days) | Result | Source |
|---|---|---|
Total border crossings | 17.796 million, daily average up 10.1% year on year | National Immigration Administration |
Crossings by mainland residents | 9.514 million, daily average up 10.2% | National Immigration Administration |
Foreign visitors entering visa-free | 460,000, up 28.5% | National Immigration Administration |
Domestic trips | 596 million, 95 million more than the 8-day 2025 holiday | Ministry of Culture and Tourism |
Growth was steady rather than explosive, and the 2026 break was one day longer than 2025’s, so part of the gain is simply the calendar.
Short-haul travel dominated. Beijing Business Today summed up the holiday as the “5-hour flight circle.” Qunar’s ten most-booked outbound cities were all in Asia-Pacific: Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong, Singapore, Seoul, Phuket, Ho Chi Minh City, Bali, Sydney and Chiang Mai. Fliggy reported that outbound flight, hotel and activity bookings each rose more than 30%.
Long-haul growth came in pockets. Italy got a lift from the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics, with Tongcheng reporting hotel bookings in cities such as Milan and Venice up more than 200%. Qunar’s fastest-growing markets were newer names: Kazakhstan (+310%), Uzbekistan (+260%), Oman (+220%), South Africa and Brazil (both +200%).
Eight Chinese New Year 2027 travel trends hotels should plan for
1. Visa-free Asia will carry the volume
A Spring Festival planning guide published in July 2026 by Chongqing Haixia International Travel Service positions Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore as the default choices for first-time outbound travelers and families. The reasons are practical: visa-free entry (30 days in Malaysia and Singapore), short flights and, in Malaysia, widespread Chinese. Price helps too. For the 2026 holiday, Qunar placed Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia in the group with one-way fares under RMB 1,500.
Thailand’s story is worth studying. Tourism Economics told TTG China that safety incidents and negative coverage in Thailand and parts of Southeast Asia weighed heavily on the Chinese market in 2025. By the 2026 Spring Festival, Thailand had regained the top spot in Qunar’s rankings. Chinese travelers move away fast when they feel unsafe, and they return once that perception fades.
The old favorites still take the biggest share. According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, China was Thailand’s largest source market in the first quarter of 2026, with 1.49 million of 9.31 million foreign arrivals (China News Service). Total arrivals slipped 2.5%, and the authority now puts “value over volume” first, aiming for higher spending per trip and a stronger reputation for value and safety. In the Maldives, China became the largest source market again in 2025 and still led in mid-July 2026, with 190,016 of 1,155,017 arrivals (MMTV). Bali also made Qunar’s 2026 top ten.
What it means for hotels: in short-haul markets, you compete on price and convenience against hundreds of similar properties. Reassurance is what sets you apart: clear safety and transfer information, Chinese-language support before arrival, and familiar payment options.
2. Japan is the wild card, and South Korea is winning share
Chinese arrivals to Japan fell 56.4% year on year in the first half of 2026, to about 2.06 million, according to JNTO figures reported by SoraNews24. June marked the seventh straight monthly decline, following a government travel advisory that discouraged trips to Japan. This is largely due to the souring of the governmental relationship between Beijing and Tokyo. However, such an impasse has limited impact on affluent travelers.
South Korea picked up much of that demand. Over January 1 to 3, 2026, Korea was the top outbound destination for mainland travelers and Japan dropped out of the top 10, with Trip.com reporting outbound bookings to Korea up 68% and hotel bookings up 91% (China Daily via Asia News Network). Cruise lines replaced Japanese ports with Busan and Jeju on early-2026 sailings. During Golden Week 2026, Seoul was the top destination on Trip.com, with international flight bookings up 91%, and Japan was missing from the lists of popular destinations (China Daily HK).
What it means for hotels: properties in Japan should not build a Chinese New Year 2027 forecast on 2024 or 2025 volumes, but they should keep a low-cost Chinese content presence so they are visible if sentiment turns. Hotels in Korea, and in alternatives such as Malaysia and Singapore, should expect Japan’s lost demand to keep flowing their way.
3. Longer trips with more stops
The October Golden Week, which can be stretched to 13 days with three days of leave, is the best recent read on long-break behavior. Trip.com said outbound hotel stays of seven nights or more were up 123% year on year, multi-destination bookings were up 84%, and the average outbound trip ran more than nine days. Ctrip said the share of package travelers on trips of eight days or more rose from 29% in 2024 to about 42%.
Chinese New Year trips follow the same pattern. Tuniu put the average long-haul Spring Festival trip at 9.8 days in 2026, against 5.7 days for short-haul. Among Chinese travelers planning a Europe trip this autumn, the European Travel Commission found an average planned stay of 11 nights across 2.7 countries, with only 19% visiting a single country (reported by TTG China).
What it means for hotels: you are usually one stop on a longer route. Package your hotel as the natural second or third city, offer extended-stay rates, and brief the tour operators who build these itineraries. We covered this in more detail in our Golden Week 2026 guide for hotels.
4. Departures start early and spread out
“Chinese New Year week” is no longer one week. Airbnb said more than 70% of its February 2026 Spring Festival bookings fell outside the official holiday dates. Qunar saw two departure peaks, one before the holiday and one during it, with some travelers leaving about a week early by combining leave with the break (Yicai).
Booking lead times are long for long-haul. A Sohu travel column published on October 21, 2026, advises families to lock in long-haul Spring Festival trips three to six months ahead and to wait for late deals on short-haul. It also notes that “non-refundable once confirmed” is the norm for Spring Festival products, which is why travelers settle their dates before they book.
What it means for hotels: for a February trip to Europe, Australia or New Zealand, the decision window is open right now. Short-haul hotels can still win bookings in December and January, but rate plans should cover the week before New Year’s Eve and the week after the official break, not only the holiday itself.
5. Nature, snow and summer in the Southern Hemisphere
The Chongqing guide names outdoor and nature trips as the mainstream way to spend the 2027 holiday: hiking in New Zealand, chasing the northern lights in the Arctic, and sunshine in southern Europe. Norway has gained popularity for three years running, and Iceland and Hokkaido draw snow seekers. The 2026 booking data supports this. Qunar reported Spring Festival hotel bookings in Norway up 1.5x and New Zealand up 2x year on year, with Egypt up 3.3x and Spain, Australia, Türkiye and Portugal each more than doubling.
Younger travelers lean in hardest. During Golden Week 2026, Trip.com saw Gen Z flight bookings to Queenstown up 314% and to Auckland up 276%, while searches for scenic and nature trips rose 53%.
What it means for hotels: sell the experience first and the room second. Aurora wake-up calls, guided hikes, glacier or reef day trips, and summer beach programs give Chinese travelers a reason to choose you and something to post about.
6. Families shape the long-haul decision
Families remain the main long-haul group, according to Tongcheng. Ctrip data from January 2026 showed families with young children favoring Singapore and Bangkok, while families with middle-school children leaned toward Sydney and Auckland. The Sohu column adds a useful nuance: families traveling with children and grandparents care less about the lowest price than about an easy trip. They will pay more for direct flights, higher-category hotels and included meals to avoid transfers and hassle.
What it means for hotels: make the easy option obvious. Connecting rooms, family suites, kids’ programs, airport transfers and a breakfast that works for a Chinese family belong at the top of your Chinese-language listing, not in the fine print.
7. The recovery is slower and more selective than the headlines
Tourism Economics revised China’s outbound recovery downward in early 2026. A full return to 2019 levels is now expected in 2027 instead of 2026, held back by slower economic growth, cautious income expectations and safety concerns (TTG China). The long-term picture is still strong. China is expected to add more traveling households than any other country between 2025 and 2035, including more than 20 million new international-travel households. By 2030, Chinese trips to Asia-Pacific, Europe and Latin America are forecast to be about 50% above 2019. The US is the exception and is not expected to regain its 2019 level by 2030.
The European Travel Commission’s autumn survey shows the same split. The share of Chinese respondents planning a Europe trip between September and December 2026 fell 15 points to 54%. Yet the share that had already booked flights rose to 37%, up from 33% a year earlier and 26% in autumn 2019. Among those planning a trip, 61% would be first-time visitors to Europe.
What it means for hotels: fewer people are casually dreaming about a trip, and more of those who plan one go on to book it. Broad awareness campaigns matter less than being present, in Chinese, at the moment a traveler is comparing options.
8. Türkiye shows how fast a visa change can move demand
Since January 2, 2026, Türkiye has let ordinary Chinese passport holders enter without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period (Yicai). It received nearly 245,000 Chinese visitors in the first half of 2026, up 28.05% year on year and the fastest growth of any of its source markets, while its total arrivals fell 2.39% (Xinhua via The Star). The national tourism agency is aiming for one million Chinese visitors. It has added a Chinese-language section to GoTürkiye, and Istanbul Airport now holds “China-Friendly Airport” certification. The Middle East conflict is the main risk: some travelers now see the whole region as unsafe, and Türkiye has felt that too (Yicai Global). Even so, ahead of May Day, Spring Tour named Türkiye, Central Asia and the Transcaucasia region as popular choices.
What it means for hotels: if you are in Türkiye or another market that recently eased entry for Chinese travelers, put your Chinese-language listings and content live now, while long-haul Spring Festival trips are being booked. If your region is in the news, answer safety questions directly on those pages.

FAQ
How long is the Chinese New Year holiday in 2027?
Probably nine days, though the official notice is not out yet. Since 2025, China’s rules guarantee four statutory days off for the Spring Festival, and the break normally runs eight days from New Year’s Eve. Because New Year’s Eve falls on Friday, February 5, Changjiang Daily reported that the break can run into the weekend for nine days. The State Council’s annual notice will confirm the dates.
What is the Chinese zodiac animal for 2027?
2027 is the Year of the Goat, and more specifically the Fire Goat in the traditional cycle. The Chinese character 羊 (yáng) can mean goat, sheep or ram, so you will see all three in English. For campaign creative, the goat or sheep is the safe choice, and the character itself reads naturally to Chinese guests.
How much do Chinese tourists spend when they travel abroad?
Chinese travelers averaged just under US$500 per night in 2024, according to Tourism Economics, as reported by TTG Asia. For Europe trips planned in late 2026, Chinese respondents to the European Travel Commission survey expected to spend about €149 per person per day. The two figures measure different things, so compare like with like when you set rates or package prices.
Which countries are visa-free for Chinese tourists?
Several popular destinations allow visa-free entry for ordinary Chinese passport holders. Thailand has a mutual visa exemption that started on March 1, 2024, allowing stays of up to 30 days. Malaysia and Singapore allow 30 days. Türkiye has allowed visa-free tourism and transit stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period since January 2, 2026.
Chinese New Year 2027 will reward hotels that plan early, package for longer trips and make life easy for families. The travelers are still coming, but they are more selective and they decide sooner than many hotels expect. If you want to know how visible your property is to Chinese travelers today, book a free visibility audit with BWB and we will show you where you stand before the booking window closes.
