Chinese seniors 50+ are over half of Tuniu's off-peak outbound trips. Learn how hotels and DMCs can build direct shoulder-season offers for them.
Travelers aged 50 and over make up more than half of off-peak outbound trips on Tuniu (途牛) after National Day, and they favor long-haul European tours, according to Tuniu booking data reported by Pinchain (品橙旅游).
Tuniu is a Chinese online travel agency with a large package-tour business. Its figures likely skew toward package and group products.
A senior shoulder season is forming
Why it matters: You can sell mid-October onward as a season of its own. Retirees travel when rates drop, and their trips can fill soft shoulder-period occupancy.
Most of these seniors book through package operators, so hotels and DMCs have room to sell them a direct product.
Europe leads the off-peak ranking
By the numbers: Tuniu reported its off-peak figures as shares and rankings, with no volumes.
50+ share: more than half of Tuniu's off-peak outbound trips.
Top ten outbound destinations on Tuniu: Italy, France, Switzerland, Germany, Maldives, Austria, Belgium, Indonesia, New Zealand, South Korea.
National Day 2026: 4.444 million mainland resident exits and entries, up 9.3% year on year, per the National Immigration Administration, as cited by Lüjie.
Between the lines: Retirees now plan their own trips
China's newest retirees have more money and better health than the package-tour stereotype, and many organize travel themselves. Beijing Evening News reporting, carried by China News Service in April 2026, describes a "new silver generation" born in the 1960s that relies less on agencies. Many of them drive and use AI tools to plan routes.
Spends more. In Tongcheng (同程) data for January to September 2025, reported by Yangzi Evening News, users aged 60+ spent over 30% more per person on accommodation than younger users and favored mid- to high-end hotels.
Buys premium trips. In the same data, travelers aged 50 to 70 were over 70% of outbound luxury cruise users and over 90% of polar cruise customers paying more than RMB 100,000.
Travels often and long. Tongcheng said in June 2026 that many active users aged 55 to 75 take three to four long trips a year. Its senior group tours averaged 7.5 days, up 2.3 days year on year.
Wants somewhere new. A Zhongxin Tourism Group (众信旅游集团) PR manager told Beijing Evening News that many were early outbound travelers, so classic routes feel stale to them. Qunar (去哪儿) reported that over 7,600 travelers aged 55 to 70 flew to Uzbekistan in 2025.
Each figure comes from one platform, and platforms define "silver" differently (50+, 55+, 60+).
Flashback: Seniors found this window in 2020
Seniors were using Double Ninth Festival (重阳节) for cheaper, quieter trips six years ago. In 2020, Lvmama (驴妈妈) told China Daily that elderly travelers wanted lower prices and smaller crowds than during National Day, and typically chose 4-5 night packages.
The festival honors the elderly, and travel companies have long used it to market senior trips.
Cheap fares meet free calendars
The big picture: Flight and hotel prices fall sharply once National Day ends. Retirees have no school or work calendar to follow, so they can take that window.
Double Ninth falls on a weekend this year, and Tuniu expects a small peak from Oct. 16 to 18, mostly domestic hiking at mountains such as Huangshan. About 60% of Tuniu's domestic off-peak users are booking autumn-foliage trips, and 3-5 day itineraries are growing fastest.
Zoom in: Longer trips, more countries
Chinese travelers took longer trips with more stops this National Day.
Ctrip (携程) data: 42% of outbound holiday travelers chose trips of eight days or more, versus 29% in 2024.
Tongcheng data: multi-country bookings rose over 60% year on year, averaging 2.8 countries per trip.
More travelers now assemble their own itineraries from platforms, social media and AI recommendations.
Build a direct offer for slow travelers
What to do: Chinese outbound demand no longer peaks only at Spring Festival, Labor Day and National Day, so plan your China offer around the whole year. This year Mid-Autumn Festival fell three workdays before National Day. In an August 2026 report, Guangzhi Tour (广之旅), part of Lingnan Holdings, said travelers who took 3 days of leave got a 13-day break, and its long-haul outbound bookings rose 62% month on month. Prices for mid-holiday departures fell 15% to 20%, while peak-date departures rose 20% to 25%. In June 2026, Tongcheng reported that travelers aged 55+ had made nearly 70% of its departure-city group-tour orders since the start of the month, before the summer peak.
Tour operators sell itineraries. A hotel or DMC can sell longer, slower stays in Chinese.
Price the shoulder windows. Set rates and packages for bridge periods, the weeks after National Day, Double Ninth and the gap before summer.
Package for slow travel. Offer Chinese-language, multi-night stays at a slower pace, sized for 8+ day trips.
Make booking easy. Take WeChat and Alipay payments on your own booking channel.
Reward extra nights. Multi-country trips split stays among neighboring destinations, so use extended-stay incentives to win more of those nights.
Train staff. Azerbaijan's China Ready program has trained over 100 tourism workers and offers Chinese-speaking guides and better payment options. Chinese arrivals there reached 57,000 in the first 10 months of 2025, up 49%. Other factors may explain that rise, but you can use the program as a template for your own training checklist.
