Chinese Golden Week 2026 survey: families want slower trips, safety and Chinese-language service. See what hotels, DMOs and DMCs can offer them.
A survey finds 77% of Chinese respondents had traveled abroad in 2026 or planned to, up from 67% a year earlier, and the families among them want slower trips with Chinese-language service, reported by TTG China.
Why it matters
Mid-range and economy hotels make up 62% of stated lodging plans and luxury only 5%, so luxury hotels may need to sell family rooms and packages on value instead of competing on price.
Respondents say current products fit multi-generation families poorly. Hotels, DMCs and DMOs can fill that gap with offers promoted directly in Chinese.
70% of family travelers choose organized formats (group, semi-independent, custom or private tours), so intermediaries still shape much of the booking.
By the numbers
46% plan Golden Week trips of 6-10 days, versus 33% for the May Day holiday; 12% plan more than 10 days.
28% budget RMB 10,000-20,000 per person, including international transport and accommodation; 22% budget over RMB 30,000.
39% set a nightly hotel budget of RMB 500-1,000.
Only 6% say they won't go abroad in 2026, down from 10% in 2025.
South Korea ranks first for Golden Week. Singapore jumped from seventh place last National Day holiday to second.
Zoom in
Among respondents with outbound experience, nearly half have traveled abroad with family: 52% with children, about half with parents or other elders. 27% prefer three-generation trips.
Family travelers rank safety, value for money and comfort first. Chinese-language service, emergency and medical support, Chinese food and family rooms also draw attention.
Respondents call current itineraries too fast. They ask for slow pacing, accessibility, age-appropriate services and flexibility.
Flashback
Dragon Trail's 2025 forecast, cited by China Daily, also pointed to strong South Korea demand, with Europe leading long-haul and independent travel the preferred mode.
In the 2025 National Day and Mid-Autumn holiday, mainland residents made 9.165 million entries and exits, up 9.6% year on year.
During the 2026 Mid-Autumn holiday, mainland entries and exits reached 3.206 million, up 5.3%, according to Guangming Online.
The two holiday windows differ in length, so you can't compare the growth rates directly.
The big picture
Golden Week 2026 merged with Mid-Autumn Festival. Many workers took 3 days of leave for 13 days off ("request 3, rest 13"), which explains the longer trips.
In the first three days of the holiday, Shanghai Pudong airport handled over 319,000 entries and exits, according to CAAC News. Mainland residents made up 69%.
About two-thirds of those mainland travelers chose short-haul Asia, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Nearly 30% went long-haul.
Tongcheng Travel (同程旅行) says hotel booking interest in Iceland, Switzerland and France doubled year on year. Multi-country bookings rose over 60%, averaging 2.8 countries and usually 7+ days.
What to do
For DMCs and luxury hotels alike, **build a slow-paced, multi-generation package **to capitalize on this growing demand: fewer stops per day, family rooms, Chinese meals and a Chinese-speaking contact for emergencies and medical help.
Market it directly in Chinese and lead with safety and medical support, the top family concerns.
Price for the RMB 500-1,000 per room nightly band, or justify the premium with included services.
For 6-10 day and multi-country trips, pitch extra nights in secondary cities to the DMOs and DMCs that route travelers.
