How WeChat Moments advertising works — ad formats, targeting, costs and buying models — and what luxury travel and fintech brands need to launch.
Every Chinese consumer you want to reach opens one app dozens of times a day. Weixin and WeChat had 1.432 billion combined monthly active users as of 31 March 2026 — and Moments, the scrolling feed of friends' photos and updates, is where most of that attention sits. Tencent
Moments ads are the only paid placement in China that appears inside a private social feed, styled like a post from a friend. For luxury hotels, destination marketing organisations and cross-border fintech brands, that native quality is the whole point: your brand shows up in the same space as a friend's holiday photos, and users can like and comment on your ad the way they would on anything else.
This guide covers what Moments ads are, the formats available, how targeting works, what they cost, and what an overseas brand needs in place before running one.
What are WeChat Moments ads?
Moments ads are native in-feed placements inside WeChat's social feed. They carry the advertiser's Official Account avatar and name, a short caption, an image or video, and a text link to a landing page. Users can like them, comment on them, and see which of their friends have done the same.
That social layer is what separates Moments from a standard feed buy. An ad that collects genuine comments gets more reach and more credibility, because the endorsement is visible and attributable to real contacts.

Why Moments works for travel, hospitality and fintech
Three things make Moments unusually well suited to these categories:
Travel and business-trip targeting. WeChat can serve ads to users who are physically travelling in a given location rather than living there — including a list of markets outside mainland China. A resort in Thailand or a currency card aimed at outbound travellers can reach Chinese users while they are on the ground in the destination, not months before or after.
High-intent landing destinations. A Moments ad can open directly into a Mini Program booking flow, a Channels livestream, or a form that hands the user straight to a WeCom (Enterprise WeChat) sales rep. There is no drop-off to an external browser.
Retargeting inside a closed ecosystem. You can re-serve to people who already follow your Official Account, engaged with a previous ad, claimed a coupon, or added your WeCom account — and exclude them just as easily.
The one limitation to know about
WeChat retired targeting of users permanently resident outside mainland China at the end of 2021. If your goal is reaching Chinese diaspora communities in London, Vancouver or Sydney, Moments is not the tool. Moments reaches consumers based in mainland China — including when they travel.
WeChat Moments ad formats
Every campaign runs on exactly one format. Interactive formats are gated behind high minimum spends and are generally reserved for brand campaigns, so most advertisers start with Standard or Card.

Format | What it does | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
Standard (image) | 1, 3, 4 or 6 square images, caption up to 30 characters, text CTA link | Default workhorse; broadest objective support |
Standard (video) | Short video, landscape or vertical, auto-trimmed in feed | Same as above, with motion |
Card | Image or video plus a product card — CTA button, selling-point thumbnail, countdown timer, rotating copy, up to three tags | Promotions, launches, limited offers |
Full-frame | Edge-to-edge video with no border | Premium brand creative |
Panoramic | 360° image users pan through | Property tours, destination showcases |
Swipe | User swipes the card to trigger a reward page | Gifting and campaign mechanics |
Long-press | User holds the card to unlock a reward page | Same, with ambient feed animation |
Carousel | 3–6 rotating cards in the feed | Product windows, Channels campaigns |
Shake | User shakes the phone to reveal a randomised prize | Festival and CNY campaigns |
IP interactive | A character breaks out of the video frame and stays on the card | Mascot and IP-led brand work |
Interactive formats have historically carried minimum spends running from RMB 1M to RMB 5M per campaign. Confirm current thresholds with your media partner — they move.

Social add-ons you can layer on
These sit on top of the format rather than replacing it:
Seeded first comment — the brand posts the opening comment itself, up to 40 characters, and can reply once to each user comment.
@friend commenting — a user tags a friend, who gets a notification and enters the ad. Impressions generated this way are not billed.
Celebrity interaction — the ad displays a celebrity's avatar and name in place of the brand's, with a co-branded introduction page behind it.
Store tags — surfaces attributes like "24-hour reception" or "free parking" on the ad card. Tencent has cited these as lifting both click and engagement rates.
Where the ad sends people
Choose the landing destination to match the objective:
Native promotion page — Tencent's own fast-loading builder, with image, video, form, text, button and page-flip components
Mini Program — best for direct booking or checkout
Official Account article — the simplest option; you just supply the article link
Custom H5 link — maximum creative control
Channels video or livestream page — for content and live commerce
App Store page — for app install objectives
Native pages can now push a form submission straight into a WeCom customer-service handoff, or drop the user into a WeCom group chat with one tap. For high-consideration purchases — a villa booking, a wealth product — that direct-to-human step is usually where the conversion actually happens.
Targeting options
Layer | What's available |
|---|---|
Demographic | Gender, custom age ranges, relationship status, education, device and OS |
Geographic | Province, city and district — roughly 300+ cities and 2,800+ districts |
Travel | Users currently travelling or on business in a given mainland location, plus around 20 markets outside mainland China |
Retargeting | Current followers, followers lost in the last month, users who engaged with your ads in the past year, coupon claimers, WeCom contacts |
Custom audiences | First-party phone-number lists uploaded as targeting or exclusion sets |
How much do WeChat Moments ads cost?
There are two ways to buy.
Contract buying locks in guaranteed impressions at a published rate, booked 1–28 days ahead. Minimum spend has historically started at RMB 50,000 for a standard contract, with premium modes — short-burst and long-run social — starting at RMB 500,000.
Auction buying lets you set your own CPM bid and adjust in-flight, with no impression guarantee. Daily budgets start low, which makes it the sensible route for testing.
Published contract CPM has been tiered by city:
City tier | Image ad (CPM) | Video ad (CPM) |
|---|---|---|
Core — Beijing, Shanghai | RMB 150 | RMB 180 |
Key — 20 cities incl. Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shenzhen, Hangzhou | RMB 100 | RMB 120 |
Standard — all others | RMB 50 | RMB 60 |
Verify before you budget. These rates are drawn from a published Tencent rate card and city tiers, minimums and format thresholds are revised periodically. Treat them as an order-of-magnitude guide and confirm current pricing before committing.
Bidding and cost controls
Auction campaigns run on oCPM — you nominate a conversion goal (form submission, follow, order, app activation, key page view) and a target cost, and the system optimises delivery against it while still billing on impressions.
Three delivery modes:
Balanced — steady spend, steady cost. The default for always-on activity.
Volume priority — aggressive early spend to clear the learning phase in roughly two days. Expect high early costs.
Cost priority — protects your target cost at the expense of volume.
Two features worth knowing: one-click boost lets you ring-fence an exploration budget that the platform spends within six hours to accumulate conversion data fast, useful for short campaign windows. And cost guarantee compensates the overspend when a qualifying campaign's conversion cost runs more than 20% above your average bid in the first three days — subject to a minimum conversion volume and a cap on how often you edit bids or targeting.
What an overseas brand needs before launching
Moments is not self-serve for foreign companies. In practice you need:
A verified WeChat Official Account — this supplies the avatar and name on every ad
A mainland Chinese business entity or an authorised agency to hold the ad account
Industry qualifications — hospitality, financial services and travel each have their own documentation requirements, and financial products face the strictest review
Copy that passes review — WeChat rejects creative that qualifies users by income, age, marital status or job, plus most superlatives and absolute claims
A conversion destination that lives inside WeChat — a Mini Program, native page or WeCom handoff will outperform an external link every time
FAQ
What's the minimum spend for WeChat Moments ads?
Auction campaigns can run on modest daily budgets. Guaranteed contract buys have historically started around RMB 50,000, with premium formats and short-burst placements requiring RMB 500,000 or more.
Can I target Chinese people living abroad?
No. WeChat removed overseas-resident targeting at the end of 2021. You can target mainland-based users who are currently travelling in around 20 markets outside mainland China.
Do I need a Chinese company to advertise on WeChat?
You need a mainland entity or an authorised agency to hold the advertising account, plus a verified Official Account. Most international brands work through an agency partner.
Image or video?
Video carries a roughly 20% CPM premium on the contract rate card. It generally earns it for destination and property work, where the subject is the sell. Image ads with a strong CTA often perform better on lead generation.
How long does a campaign run?
Standard contracts run 12 hours to 6 days. Long-run social contracts run 7 to 30 days. Auction campaigns run as long as you fund them.
Can users interact with the ad?
Yes — likes and comments are visible to the user's own contacts, the brand can seed the first comment and reply to users, and users can tag friends into the thread.
